Architecture and history

The castle is possibly on the site of an old Saxon court from Carolingian times. In the 10th and 11th centuries there was a palace of Saxon kings and emperors here. Around 1150 there was a moated castle with a Martin chapel.

From 1414 it was owned by the Asseburgers . In today's building, however, only a few remains of medieval architecture are preserved. In the basement of the west wing there is a large vaulted two-aisled late Gothic room. The vault rests on columns with flat capitals. The present renaissance palace was built around 1606 and 1613 . Ludwig von der Asseburg had the west wing as well as a tower and the adjoining living rooms built in 1608. The castle suffered damage during the Thirty Years War . Several modifications followed up to around 1650.

The system is designed in an H-shape. The east and west wings are projected at their ends in the form of risalits with several window axes. On the northwest side there is a tower crowned with a baroque dome. In front of the second floor, the center of the facade is emphasized by a bay window supported by consoles . Various design elements made of sandstone are heavily weathered today, such as the portals and the cornices and pilasters that structure the facades .

In 1755, Wallhausen Castle was converted into a women's and kunkelle feud , so that it could now also fall to female representatives of the family. This occurred when Hermann Werner von der Asseburg died in 1779 and his stake in Wallhausen Castle fell in equal parts to his three daughters and their descendants, including Hermann Werner Freiherr von Bochholtz, who was born in 1770 and who became Count of Bocholtz- Asseburg was raised. His descendants owned the castle until 1945. After the end of World War II , the land reform expropriated the family . The castle was then initially owned by the state of Saxony-Anhalt. On September 18, 1950 , the castle, which is owned by the people , was handed over to the community of Wallhausen. The community used the castle as a school. The vaulted room served as a gym .

In 2005 the Meier-Föllmi family bought the castle and set up a hotel with a restaurant.

In the local register of monuments , the castle is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 05761.
