Castle of the Dukes of Bar in Bar-le-Duc

The castle of the Dukes of Bar in Bar-le-Duc , a French town in the Meuse department in Lorraine , was originally built towards the end of the 10th century. The castle at 6 rue François-de-Guise was added to the list of architectural monuments in France in 1981 as a Monument historique .

Since the Duke of Upper Lorraine wanted to protect his lands, he had a castle built on a rocky promontory above the Ornaintal towards the end of the 10th century . It has been rebuilt and enlarged several times and its fortification walls have been reinforced. In the 17th century it was almost completely destroyed by the troops of the French King Louis XIV .

In 1768 the remains of the building were prepared for a lace factory that existed until 1832. After that, the two-story building housed a Dominican girls' school, which existed until the Catholic schools were banned in 1904.

The Musée Barrois has been located in the castle's rooms since 1974 .
