history
The Kiel Castle Garden was laid out as a small Renaissance garden when Adolf I expanded the castle from 1558 to 1568 into an elaborate Renaissance seat. Duchess Friederike Amalie had the complex converted into a magnificent baroque garden in 1695. However, this was no longer maintained after its heyday and in the middle of the 19th century formed the basis for the creation of an English landscape garden. After the Second World War, the facility fell into disrepair. The upper part was used as a parking lot for the university hospital. Since 2007 the beds around the equestrian statue have been laid out according to historical plans. In 2010 the terraces were restored.
