The castle ruins Kronoberg ( Swedish : Kronobergs slottsruin ) are the ruins of a former bishopric in the Swedish district of Kronobergs län in the Småland region .

location

The ruin is about five kilometers north of the district capital Växjö on an island near the banks of the Helgasjön .

history

From 1444 the castle was built by the Växjö bishop Lars Mikaelsson as the seat and refuge of the bishop of Växjö. As the most important means of defense, the complex had a large stone tower. In 1542 the fortress was the scene of a conflict between Gustav Wasa's troops and a peasant army under the leadership of Nils Dacke , who had holed up in the complex. The farmers of the Småland region, which was then independent from Sweden, rebelled against the trade embargo against Denmark , which the Swedish King Gustav Wasa wanted to force them to comply with. After the victory of the Swedish royal army, the castle was expanded by the king until 1560. The buildings on the east and west sides are now two-story. The castle hall was located in the basement of the west wing. The mansion and the royal apartment were located on the upper floor. The granary was in the east wing. A large portal tower was built above the entrance to the castle on the south side. During the war from 1563 to 1570, the complex was of great military importance. In the winter of 1568 , Erik XIV used the castle as a base while repelling an attack on northern Skåne . In 1570 there was a siege by Danish troops.

Johann III. had the system expanded around 1580. All wings were now two-story. Except for the upper part of the east wing, which was built in half-timbered construction, all buildings were made of stone. There were round towers at the corners, three of which were given a roof. The northeastern, the so-called Kokehusrondellen , remained without a roof. The castle had 50 cannons. The west and north wings were inhabited, the kitchen and supplies were housed in the east wing. The bailiff and the guards were housed in the south wing.

On the immediately neighboring island of Stallholmen there were stables and servants' quarters.

After the Peace of Roskilde and the annexation of the region to the Kingdom of Sweden, the castle lost its strategic importance and fell into disrepair. By the end of the 17th century, the complex was only a ruin.

tourism

Today the ruin is one of the most famous sights in the area around the city of Växjö. Gastronomy and steamboat trips on the Helgasjön are offered in their vicinity .
