Göran Nilsson Gyllenstierna

Baron Göran Nilsson Gyllenstierna ( Swedish Göran Nilsson formerly Gyllenstierna af Lundholm ; born December 31, 1575 at Kronoberg Castle ; † August 24, 1618 ) was a Swedish Imperial Admiral .

Life

Origin and family

Göran was a member of the Swedish barons Gyllenstierna af Lundholm . His parents were the Swedish statesman Nils Gyllenstierna (1526-1601) and Ebba Axelsdotter, née Bielke .

Göran's older brother, Johan Nilsson Gyllenstierna (1569-1617), had in 1598 in the throne dispute between the Catholic King Sigismund III. and the Lutheran imperial administrator Karl IX. (Sigmund's uncle) on Sigismund's side and had been appointed Imperial Admiral by the king. Johan had not been able to prevail against the Reichsadmiral Joachim Scheel, who was also appointed by the Reich Administrator, and withdrew to Poland, where he founded the Polish branch of the Gyllenstierna family .

Göran married Ingeborg Claesdotter Bielkenstierna († 1628) in 1600. The marriage resulted in eight children, including the Swedish admiral Göran Göransson Gyllenstierna (1601–1646).

Career

Gyllenstierna's career coincided with the Polish-Swedish War , in which he participated actively on several occasions. In 1601 he was chamberlain to Duke Karl and in 1602 was promoted to Reichsrat . He was Reich Vice Admiral as early as 1610 and then Reich Admiral from 1612 to 1618. He was also Lagman in Tjust and the first President of the Admiralty College.

Gyllenstierna was Baron von Lundholmen near Vrigstad , Jönköping and heir to Björksund and Helgö, both near Tystberga, Södermanland .

On the occasion of Gustav II Adolf's coronation in 1617, Gyllenstierna received the accolade . He was buried on May 14, 1619 in the Bälinge Church, Uppland .
