Baron Johann Guldenstern , also Güldenstern , ( Swedish Johan Nilsson formerly Gyllenstierna af Lundholm ; Polish Jan Guldenstern ; born January 31, 1569 in Stockholm , † March 1617 in Danzig ) was a Swedish admiral .

Life

Origin and family

Johan was a member of the Swedish barons Gyllenstierna af Lundholm . His parents were the Swedish statesman Nils Gyllenstierna (1526-1601) and Ebba Axelsdotter, née Bielke . The later Swedish Imperial Admiral Göran Nilsson Gyllenstierna (1575-1618) was his younger brother. Johan married Countess Sigrid Brahe (1568–1617), a daughter of Peder Brahe (1520–1590), in Stegeborg in 1595 . The marriage resulted in three sons.

Career

Gyllenstierna had in 1598 as Rittmeister of the Swedish aristocratic flag in the throne dispute between the Catholic King Sigismund III. and the Lutheran imperial administrator Karl IX. (Sigmund's uncle) on Sigismund's side and had been appointed Imperial Admiral by the king. Johan had not been able to assert himself against the Reichsadmiral Joachim Scheel, who was also appointed by the Reich Administrator . The attack of the royal fleet on Älvsborg , carried out under his command and with Danish and Polish help, failed. Gyllenstierna then retired to Poland , where he became the founder of the Pomeranian Güldenstern line .

He was the hereditary lord on Fågelvik. He was buried in the Marienkirche in Gdansk, where his son Sigismund built a burial chapel for him .
