The butterfly Mormon tulip ( Calochortus venustus ) is a species of the genus Mormon tulips ( Calochortus ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).
features
The butterfly Mormon tulip is an autumn to spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 60 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. Brood bulbs can be found at the base of the stem. The basal leaves have wilted when they bloom.
One to six (rarely up to ten) flowers are in a racemose inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The bracts are 30 to 50 millimeters long and colored yellow, white, purple or dark red. They are darkly spotted at the bottom, above which there is usually a second, lighter spot. The nectar gland is square and has short hairs.
The flowering period extends from May to July.
Occurrence
The butterfly Mormon tulip occurs in California in grassland and woodland, as well as in yellow pine forests on sand at altitudes of 300 to 2700 meters.
