Fast (pitcher)

Rapid with tin lid, Siegburg, 1560–1570; white stoneware, salt glazed; Museum of Applied Arts , Frankfurt am Main

A Schnell is a slim, tall, cylindrically tapered beer mug made of whitish-gray stoneware with a handle and metal lid. Successors to the Schnell in the second half of the 17th century were the more compact tankard and the bulbous and lower-handled mug , both of which also mostly had a pewter lid .

They were made in Siegburg in the 16th and 17th centuries and are usually richly decorated with allegories . At that time, Siegburg belonged to the Duchy of Berg under Wilhelm the Rich (1539–1592), and therefore frequent motifs on Schnellen are the coat of arms of Jülich-Kleve-Berg and the portrait of Wilhelm the Rich.

Schnellen can be seen in the Hetjens Museum in Düsseldorf , the Langerwehe Pottery Museum and the Raeren Pottery Museum (Belgium), but also, for example, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art . The Eschweiler Altstadtsträßchen Quick Lane is probably named after the Fast, which were purchased there in 1656 by a brewer and popular quickly.
