Schoinous or Schönus ( ancient Greek Σχοινοῦς ) was an ancient port on the Saronic Gulf . It was located in the south of what is now Kalamaki, at a point where Doric columns and other architectural fragments were found. Here was the eastern end of the Diolkos , a paved path on which small ships could be pulled across the Isthmus of Corinth . At the western end was the place Poseidonia . In this way the journey by ship was shortened considerably and the risky circumnavigation of the Peloponnese was avoided . Schoinous was also the port of the Poseidon sanctuary of Isthmia . Pomponius Mela called the port town Schoenitas .

About 500 m north of Kalamaki, the archaeologist Oscar Broneer discovered an early Helladic cemetery (2550-2100 BC) in 1956 during investigations in connection with the construction of the Ethniki Odos 8a in the mountains about 170 m above sea level . In the vicinity of the cemetery, potsherds were found that date from the Early Helladic to the Late Helladic period . The finds are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Isthmia.
