The oblique bile weevil ( Mecinus labilis ) is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The beetles are 1.7 to 2.2 millimeters long. Your body is black. They have an elongated oval shape. The red-brown elytra have two dark brown to black-brown oblique bands. The label is white. With the exception of the tip, the wing cover seam is black to dark brown in color. The femora are black or dark brown, while the tibia and tarsi are reddish brown in color. The antennae and the tip of the trunk are also colored red-brown. The rows of flaps of the wing covers are single row. The hairs on the wing covers in the red-brown area are colored white.

distribution

The beetles are widespread in western and central Europe. In the north, the occurrence of the species extends to southern Sweden and the British Isles (England, Wales and Ireland). In the south the distribution area extends over the western Mediterranean region ( Iberian Peninsula and Italy), in the east over Eastern Europe to Russia.

Way of life

The beetles appear from April. They are most commonly seen between May and July, during the mating season. The larvae develop in the root neck of various plantain species, especially ribwort ( Plantago lanceolata ). Pupation also takes place there. Since the beetles can also be observed in winter, the species hibernates at least partially as an imago .

Taxonomy

The species was scientifically described by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst in 1795 as Curculio labilis Herbst , 1795. In addition to this designation, the following synonyms can be found in the literature :

  • Gymnetron labile ( autumn , 1795)
  • Gymnaetron labile ( autumn , 1795)
