Occurrence
In the tropical rivers of South America :
- Brazil
- Ecuador
-
Colombia
- Rio Caquetta
- Rio Amazon
- Rio Solimoes
- Peru
These waters have the following water values:
- a pH of 6.0 to 7.8
- a GH value of 2 ° d to 22 ° d
- a KH value of 2 ° to 12 °
- and a temperature of 22 ° C to 26 ° C.
Reproduction
In the wild, the armored catfish perform their typical mating behavior after the rainy season , when the water has warmed up again. After the rainy season there are a lot of suspended matter and therefore prey in the water. The animals perform a special mating behavior in which the male circles the female and twitches strongly, the female looks for well-suited places for spawning protected stones and leaves in order to then attach the eggs to them, which the males then fertilize.
nutrition
The hatched armored catfish is omnivorous and feeds by looking for algae, detritus , small animals and parts of plants on and near the ground .
Aquaristics
It is easy to hold, easy to care for and very adaptable. It is particularly important to note that he needs fine gravel as possible, better sand, lots of hiding spots, root wood and lush vegetation, as well as about five to ten conspecifics for his well-being and species-appropriate housing. The aquarium should have a volume of at least 56 liters.
nutrition
The following food is also suitable in the aquarium: live food ( Artemia , mosquito larvae ), frozen food and dry food (tablets, food flakes).
breed
Breeding is relatively easy compared to other Corydoras species. You place three males on one female in the breeding aquarium and simulate the rainy season by means of strong, abrupt changes in water. The females lay 200 to 500 eggs, which they stick to plants, discs or large stones. Breeding is easiest with wild caught.
