The Zhukovsky KOMTA ( Russian Жуковский КОМТА ) was a Soviet three- decker aircraft from the early 1920s. Only one copy was built.

development

In 1920, the KOMTA ( Russian Комиссия по тяжёлой авиаций , Commission for Heavy Aircraft) was founded on the proposal of W. L. Alexandrov to develop a successor to the Ilya Muromets bomber . Since the ZAGI had also set up a working group for the construction of a large aircraft around the same time, both commissions were quickly merged into the DWK. Nikolai Zhukovsky took the chair . Other members included Alexander Archangelsky , Andrei Tupolew , Boris Jurjew and Vladimir Wetschinkin .

Development work began that same year. As a wing configuration was chosen the three-decker design . The basic construction consisted of wood with fabric covering. With its glazed bow and box-shaped hull, the model was still vaguely reminiscent of the Ilya Muromets. Two Fiat-A-12 engines were selected as drives, but they were somewhat inefficient. The plane should be able to carry ten passengers.

The first assemblies were built in Sarapul in January 1921 , and final assembly took place in the Awiarabotnik plant in Moscow . In March 1922, with W. M. Remesjuk at the controls, the aircraft performed a short hop that broke the tail spur when it touched down. It was found that the focus had been shifted too far back due to inexperience in building multi-engine aircraft. Therefore, the engines were moved forward by about a meter.

In 1922/23 some taxiing attempts were made and in autumn 1923 the first real flight took place with the pilot A. I. Tomaschewski. However, the KOMTA was difficult to fly and the performance data was far from being satisfactory. The last flights took place in the spring of 1924, after which the plane came to the “Strelba” school in Serpuchow .
