The school building at Gitterseer Straße 28 in the Birkigt district of Freital once housed the town's first school, later the municipal office and the "Freital School History Museum". It was on 9 February 1999 until it was demolished in February 2018 listed .

history

The two-story building was erected in 1876 by the municipality of Birkigt. The foundation stone was laid on March 20, 1876, and the new school was inaugurated on September 27. It is the first school building in the community, whose children no longer had to go to school in Potschappel . Originally there was a small tower on the roof with a privately donated clock and striking mechanism. In addition to the classrooms and living quarters, there was also a teaching kitchen in the school at times. However, the rapid increase in the number of residents in Birkigt soon led to capacity utilization and overloading of the building, so that in 1898 another school building was built in the immediate vicinity . This second building still houses the Ludwig-Richter-Grundschule Freital-Birkigt today. The old school building served the community as an official building from 1898 until it was incorporated into Freital in 1923; some rooms were still used for teaching until 1996.

During the Second World War , the building was damaged during the air raid on Birkigt on August 24, 1944. The lessons were therefore held temporarily in Burgk . In addition, about 100 American prisoners of war were housed in the school building during the war.

In 1994, with the privately initiated renovation of a classroom and the collection of school history documents from the region, the establishment of a school museum began . In 1996 the classroom, furnished according to the historical model, was opened to visitors. Later the exhibition area increased to over 100 m². In 1997 the “Association for the Promotion of the School History Museum Freital e. V. ”from eleven members who continued to operate the museum.

The Freital School History Museum has been closed since December 1, 2011. According to information from the development association, the costs could no longer be covered due to reduced funds. There was also a lack of volunteer staff to look after the exhibition. From May 2017, parts of the exhibition will be housed in the Freital Municipal Collections in the "School History Cabinet" at Burgk Castle.

On August 3, 2016, the demolition permit for the building was granted in order to be able to erect a new building for the neighboring primary school. It was demolished in February 2018.
