The Schullwitz Nixenteich is a pond in the course of the Schullwitzbach on the southwestern edge of Schullwitz , one of the Dresden districts in the Schönfeld highlands . The 0.5 hectare Schullwitz Nixenteich and the green spaces surrounding it belong to the 1.2 hectare Dresden Natural Monument (No. 77) Nixenteich Schullwitz .

The name addition of the Nixenteich serves to distinguish between the 3.2 km northeast and around ten times larger Rossendorfer pond , which is also called the Nixenteich, and the 0.34 ha large mermaid pond near Schönfeld , 2.3 km to the west, that of a Keppbach -Inflow is flowed through.

Location and history

Although the Nixenteich is today on the southwestern edge of the settlement of Schullwitz, the pond belonged to the Schönfeld manor until 1945. After the lime pond, it is the second standing water in the course of the Schullwitzbach, before it flows through the Schullwitz village pond, the Schulteich and the Mühlteich in Schullwitz.

After three muskrats were brought to Europe in 1905 and released south of Prague, they spread through Bohemia to neighboring countries by 1927. In the second half of the 1920s they could be found in the Dresden area. As part of his dissertation at the Technical University of Dresden , Johannes Ulbrich had the animals caught and marked at the Schullwitz Nixenteich and two other ponds before they were released again for further studies and hunted differently.

In the course of a resolution by the Dresden District Council on August 26, 1982, the publicly owned Schullwitz Nixenteich with the surrounding small area was placed under protection as a natural monument . The reason was "the occurrence and spawning area of amphibians and reptiles as well as nesting areas for water birds and resting places for migrants."

When the flood of the century struck in August 2002 after intense, days-long rainfall , Schullwitz, one of the highest districts in Dresden, was also affected. On August 12, 2002 at around 5 p.m. the mermaid pond overflowed, so that the Schullwitzbach swelled to a width of around 20 meters below the drain.

Among other things, to improve the maintenance of the Nixenteich and to reduce flooding after the pond has run off, the Dresden city council decided in January 2020 on a flood risk management plan for the Schullwitzbach, which provides for the creation of a dam at the Nixenteich.
