Vinzenz Rosenzweig von Schwannau (* 1791 in Znaim , Moravia , † December 8, 1865 in Vienna ) was an Austrian diplomat and orientalist . He became known as a translator of oriental literature.

Life

Vinzenz Rosenzweig von Schwannau was born in 1791 as the son of a civil servant in Znojmo (Znojmo, Moravia). After training at the Imperial and Royal Academy for Oriental Languages from 1799 to 1808 , he was sent to the Imperial and Royal Internationals in Constantinople (Istanbul) as a "language boy" . From 1813 he worked at the kk agentie in Wallachia . From 1817 to 1847 he was professor for oriental languages ​​at the Oriental Academy in Vienna. In 1831 Rosenzweig was appointed court secretary by Schwannau.

The subjects of the scientific work of Vinzenz Rosenzweig von Schwannau were the literatures of the Orient, especially Persian poetry . He dealt intensively with Nur od-Din 'Abd or-Rahmān Jāmi . His German translation of the divan by the Persian poet Hafis is still important for contemporary orientalist research .
