Joseph Mitrani

Joseph Mitrani , also Joseph Trani or Joseph di Trani (* 1568 in Safed , † 1639 in Constantinople ), was a Jewish scholar and Talmudist and from 1625 to 1639 Grand Rabbi in Constantinople.

Life

He was also called Mahrimat ( Hebrew : מהרימ"ט) by scholars of his time . He was considered one of the most important Talmudists of his time. Today he is generally listed under Maharit (Hebrew: מהרי"ט) in literature .

In 2008 his grave was discovered in Safed , Israel by the bibliophile and bookseller Shlomo Epstein. It is located next to the grave of Rabbi Moshe Alshich. Maharit had died and was buried in Constantinople, but his sons later had his remains brought to Palestine and buried near his father Moshe di Trani .

Mitrani is the author of the three-volume “She'elot u-Teshubot” ( Responsen ). The first part contains 152 responses, together with a general index, published in Constantinople in 1641. The second part with 111 responses appeared in Venice in 1645. The third part comprises commentaries on the 4th part of the ritual codex, together with notes on the treatise Kiddushin and on RaNs and Alfasi's commentaries on Ketubot and ushiddushin, printed in Venice in 1645. The complete work was published in Fürth in 1764.
