The black bean ( Aphis fabae ) is a relatively common representative of the aphids from the family of the tube aphids (Aphididae).

features

The winged and winged nymphs are broadly oval, 1.7 mm to 2.7 mm long and matt black to dark green in color. The antennae and legs are light with a dark tip. The lice have two large siphons on their abdomen.

biology

The black bean louse changes host. Hibernation takes place in the egg stage on spindle tree ( Euonymus europaeus ) and the ordinary snowball ( Viburnum opulus ). The winged lice fly on the herbaceous summer hosts in April, infesting very different plant species, e.g. B. beans, potatoes, beets and also the balsam . Several generations living in colonies are formed there. In autumn the return migration to the winter hosts and the laying of the eggs takes place.

Main symptoms and control

Characteristic is the curling of the leaves and the curvature of the shoot tips. Black fungi can settle on the honeydew released by the lice . The species also carries numerous phytopathogenic viruses.

The lice can be fought with the help of insecticides or soapy water. An important, natural enemy of aphids is the ladybird and its larvae.

distribution

The black bean louse occurs in many areas of the northern hemisphere with temperate or warmer climates.
