The orchid Black Ragwort ( Ophrys incubacea Bianca) is a species of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) and thus of the orchid family. It is visually similar to the Siponto Ragwort ( Ophrys sipontensis ) and flowers from March to May. According to some authors, it is called subspecies classified: Ophrys sphegodes subsp. atrata (Rchb.f.) A.Bolòs (Syn .: Ophrys aranifera var. atrata Rchb.f. ).

features

This herbaceous perennial plant usually reaches heights of 20 to 40, but sometimes up to 60 cm. The inflorescence includes three to eight flowers . The sepals are green, rarely pink, colored. The lateral petals are green or reddish colored. These bare leaves curl at the edge. The lip is colored in a tone between dark red-brown and black-brown or black-purple.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

The bee Andrea morio was observed as the pollinator .

Location and distribution

You can find this species in light forests, garrigues and on grasslands up to an altitude of 1300 meters in the western and central Mediterranean area .

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Western black ragwort ( Ophrys incubacea subsp. Castri -caesaris Looken ): It occurs on the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic Islands, in southern France and in western Liguria at altitudes between 50 and 1150 meters above sea level.
  • Black Ragwort ( Ophrys incubacea Bianca subsp. Incubacea ; Syn .: Ophrys atrata Lindl. Nom. Illeg.): It occurs from Portugal to southern Italy, in Istria and Dalmatia at altitudes between 0 and 1300 meters above sea level.
