The Black Pond , also known as the Big Pond , is a stagnant body of water that was artificially created together with the stone ditch at the end of the 16th century between Elterlein and Geyer in the Erzgebirge district of the Free State of Saxony . The pond is about 4.5 hectares. Since 2005 it has been part of the extended Hermannsdorfer Wiesen nature reserve , the oldest designated nature reserve in Saxony.

geography

The pond is located in the middle of the forest in the Ore Mountains in a valley through which the country road (Geyersche Strasse) leads from Elterlein to Geyer, which leads directly past the pond. It connects directly to the Magdloch , a swampy area from which the water flows. In addition, water flows from the crab hole and the hay barn ridge into the black pond.

The Wolfersbach drains the Black Pond to the southeast.

For years, the Black Pond has also been used for recreational purposes in summer, especially for swimming and camping, most recently especially for nude bathing ( nudism ). Most of the bathers came from Elterlein because this town did not have its own outdoor pool. Already in the GDR in 1967 it was considered to provide the entire pond with a fence to protect it , even if this would adversely affect the external appearance of the natural idyll "Black Pond". This project was not implemented because no relevant material was available.

When the nature reserve was expanded in 2005, swimming was strictly prohibited.

history

The black pond was created by Wolf and Georg von Elterlein at the end of the 16th century to operate the surrounding mines and the hammer mill they owned.
