The black-headed wood warbler ( Myiothlypis nigrocristata , syn .: Basileuterus nigrocristatus ) is a small songbird from the wood warbler family (Parulidae).

features

Black-headed wood warbler reach a body length of 13.5 centimeters and weigh 11.6 to 17.2 grams. The wing length is 5.5 to 6.5 centimeters in the male and 5.5 to 6 centimeters in the female. Adult black-headed warblers and young birds from the first year onwards have a black crown stripe , a wide yellow superciliar stripe that is olive green behind the eye and runs to the neck and a short black eye line. Neck, cheek and top plumage are olive green; the underside plumage light yellow with faded olive flanks and sides of the chest. The wings are dark brown with olive feather edges. The short beak is black; the legs pale orange to orange-yellow. The magnificent dress deviates only slightly from the calm dress . The olive feather edges on the wings expand wider on the wing. Juveniles have a gray to dark olive-gray head and upper side plumage and a pale olive lower side plumage.

Occurrence

The distribution area extends from Venezuela via Colombia , Ecuador to central Peru . The birds live in pairs or in small groups in mountain forests and the edge areas of cloud forests , dense scrub and bamboo plants of the genus Chusquea , mainly at heights of 2600 to 3400 meters. In Venezuela and in the west of Ecuador they can also be found up to an altitude of 1500 meters. They build their grass nest on the ground, on an embankment or on a mossy hill. The breeding season takes place between January and October. Rough times are given for the following breeding areas: February in Azuay (Ecuador); January and October in Cauca (Colombia); May to July in the Perijá Mountains (Colombia); March and July in Nariño (Colombia) and in June a young bird that had just fledged was sighted in Cundinamarca (Colombia).

The IUCN lists the species as "Least Concern".
