description

Appearance

Adult black- billed nests reach a length of approx. 35 centimeters. The weight of the males is about 184 grams, that of the females about 203 grams. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes . In both sexes, the head, neck, throat, chest, stomach and back are cream-colored, only the forehead and an eye stripe are darkened gray-black. The wings and the control feathers are dark brown and sometimes shimmer slightly bluish. The strong, long bill is black, the iris dark brown, legs and feet are dark red-brown.

Vocalizations

The utterances of the Schwarzschnabelliest consist of a series of loud "kak-kak-kak" calls that sound like a bark or "ke-kak" calls that are repeated several times.

distribution and habitat

The black-billed bird is found in Sulawesi and some surrounding islands. It prefers to colonize mangrove forests , coastal regions rich in shrubbery, swamps and wooded rivers. The altitude distribution usually reaches up to 600 meters, in exceptional cases , such as in the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, up to 980 meters.

Subspecies

In addition to the nominate form Pelargopsis melanorhyncha melanorhyncha , which occurs in Sulawesi and some associated islands , two other subspecies are known:

Way of life

The birds feed primarily on crustaceans (Crustacea). The prey animals are killed or stunned by hitting the branch on a hide, usually a branch above the water, and thereby brought into a convenient position for easy swallowing. For the islands of Muna and Buton , September is given as the breeding month. Further details on breeding behavior have yet to be researched.

Danger

The Schwarzschnabelliest is not uncommon in its distribution areas and is therefore classified by the World Conservation Organization IUCN as LC IUCN 3 1st svg" least concern = not endangered".
