The Black Siskin ( Spinus atratus , Syn .: Carduelis atrata ) is a species from the goldfinch-like subfamily . The species occurs exclusively in South America.

Appearance

The body length of the black siskin is thirteen centimeters. Its plumage is black, only the mirrors and bands on the wings as well as the hems of the outer tail feathers, the under tail covers and the belly are yellow. The beak is black and yellow. Way of life

The Black Siskin is similar to the Cordillera Siskin a bird of the mountainous regions of the Andes . It occurs predominantly on high plateaus at altitudes between 3,000 and 4,500 meters. The dwarfism of trees is characteristic of its habitat. However, there are also a lot of wild herbs in its habitat. Its distribution area extends from the south of Peru over the west of Bolivia to the north of Chile and the north-west of Argentina .

The nest is built between rubble. The clutch consists of three to five blue and white eggs. The female breeds alone. It is fed by the male during the breeding season. The breeding season is 13 to 14 days. The young birds fledge at around 17 days and become independent after another two weeks.
