The pig fish (Congiopodidae) are a family of the perch-like (Perciformes). The bottom dwellers live in the cool seas of the southern hemisphere around New Zealand , South America and southern Africa , at depths of up to 500 meters.

features

The fish are 16 to 75 centimeters long. The head is armored. Their muzzle is relatively long, teeth are small or missing. The small gill opening is well below the base of the pelvic fins . They are flaky and their skin is sometimes granular. The lateral line organ is well developed. The dorsal fins have grown together (not in Zanclorhynchus spinifer ).

Systematics

There are three genera and nine species , six of which belong to the genus Congiopodus . Alertichthys is monotypical , Zanclorhynchus contains two species. The last genera are put into their own families by some scientists, the Zanclorhynchidae. Ishii and Imamura propose two subfamilies Congiopodinae (for Congiopodus ) and Zanclorhynchinae (for Alertichthys and Zanclorhynchus ). The genus Perryena , which is closely related to the Tetrarogidae in many features , was temporarily classified in the Congiopodidae until a monotypical, independent family for Perryena was established in 2013 , the Perryenidae.

The pig fish are usually placed in the group of scorpionfish relatives (Scorpaenoidei). A study published in February 2018 showed that they are closer to the bull relatives (Cottales) and the eel mother relatives (Zoarcales) than the Scorpaenoidei. The family was therefore placed in its own, monotypical subordination, the Congiopodoidei.
