The Schweppenburger Mühle , also called Mosenmühle after its owner , is one of the very few watermills in Germany that is still in regular operation . It is driven by the Brohlbach and lies below the Schweppenburg , with which it was mentioned as early as 1377, shortly before it flows into the Rhine in the Niederlützingen district of the Brohl-Lützing municipality in the Ahrweiler district . The mill is a listed building .

Schweppenburger mill in Brohl-Lützing

history

Soon there were a dozen mills in the Brohl valley that processed grain , oil fruit and, as a specialty, the pending trass for the production of mortar . The mill location is very old. In 1377 the mill with the castle came to the Andernach aldermen Arnold von Schweppenburg as a fiefdom from the Electorate of Cologne . The respective mills remained connected to the castle until modern times.

This mill was also set up for different uses. The pan mill of the oil mill was converted into a trass mill at the beginning of the 19th century. The pan mill is still there, but is no longer in operation. The mill wheel was renewed in 1912. In 1913 the mill was taken over by Müller Mosen. Today's miller is the third generation to run the mill. According to him, there are currently - regardless of the technology - 308 mills in Germany, 185 of them small mills with an annual output of less than 5000 t. Very few of them will be water mills. In 1980, when today's miller took over the business from his father, there were still more than 2500 mills in total.

technology

The mill is still powered today by its overshot water wheel 1.60 m wide and almost 7 m in diameter. Each of the 50 or so shovels holds up to 128 liters of water. It has around 40 HP, which is transmitted to a transmission by the large gear wheel on the waterwheel shaft. In more recent times, only the original leather transmission belts have been replaced by more wear-resistant plastic belts . The old millstones are occasionally used to grind feed grain. The current mill consists of two double roller mills with the associated techniques: Plansichter , sifting passes and pneumatic Mahlgutführung and is on the cutting edge of technology.

An electric motor can take over the drive if the water level is insufficient or if repairs and overhauls are carried out.

Products

The mill grinds wheat , rye and spelled mainly from conventional farms in the region, the Brohl and Ahr valleys , with which the mill has had business connections for generations. Grist and flours are mixed individually. In the mill shop run by the miller's wife , their own products, but also a wide variety of organic products, mostly also from the region, are offered.
