I never liked swimming is the directorial debut of actor Kim Rossi Stuart from 2006, which was staged in Cannes at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs .
action
Eleven-year-old Tommi lives in Rome with his older sister Viola and his father Renato. The unstable, drifting mother Stefania left the family a long time ago. Tommi is a talented swimmer, although he doesn't enjoy the sport at all and would much rather play football. But for the sake of his father, who sees in him a future champion, he accepts the long journeys to the swimming pool.
Renato doesn't earn a lot of money with his work as a freelance cameraman, because he sometimes messes with his clients. Viola is in the middle of puberty and takes out her whims on her brother. Tommi then sneaks up on the roof of the house, which is a place of refuge for him.
One day Stefania is at the door and wants to be taken back into the family. Viola is immediately for it, Renato strictly against it and Tommi doubts. He suspects that the mother won't stay long. For some time the reunited family leads a balanced life and Stefania manages to establish closer contact with the introverted Tommi.
Tommi befriends a newly-arrived boy from the neighborhood, falls shyly and unhappily in love with a classmate. He slowly becomes more self-confident and gradually begins to take control of his life.
But suddenly the mother has disappeared again. She's gone with a new husband, leaving the family in a desperate rigidity.
One day at a swimming competition, Tommi just stopped swimming, even though he was well in the lead. He confesses to his father that he has never liked swimming. Renato is bitterly disappointed in his son and lets him feel it very strongly.
Tommi now spends a lot of time with his new friend's family and plans to go on a skiing holiday with them. But he instinctively realizes that he cannot slip away from his troubles with his family and returns to his father. Renato has already found a football club for Tommi.
Tommi receives a package from his mother from the caretaker at his school. He opens it on the bus. There is a photo of him with his mother and a tear-stained piece of paper. Stefania assures that she will always love him and that one day she will explain everything to him.
criticism
"Rossi's first film, which has received numerous awards and celebrated at film festivals, is a multi-layered work on such universal topics as love, friendship and puberty, which is mainly supported by the play of the young Alessandro Morace in the role of Tommi."
“The result is the verbose, sometimes too hectic drama of a divided family. Kim Stuart Rossi should perhaps have focused more on the quiet moments, as his young lead actor Alessandro Morace has an amazing presence. "
“A simple, sometimes poetic and almost spectacularly unspectacular film is Kim Rossi Stuart's directorial debut. A sometimes sad, sometimes poignant, but almost always hopeful drama about cautious sexual awakening and the very abrupt end of an Italian childhood. A story with no beginning and no end is told here with an unobstructed view. "
