The fungi from the family of vertigo relatives usually grow as saprobionts on dead plant material such as fallen leaves, twigs, in the coniferous litter and on wood. After a rain, some species can appear in large numbers.

Characteristics of the vertigo relatives are the usually very tough stalk and the ability to rehydrate quickly after a dry period.

The vertigo family used to encompass a large number of genera . Due to phylogenetic studies, many genera are now placed in other families, for example to the Omphalotaceae or the Physalacriaceae .
