Science of Horror - When the chainsaw becomes a penis (Original title: Science Of Horror - If the chainsaw is a penis ) is the debut film by the German director Katharina Klewinghaus. The documentary also discusses the horror film genre from the perspective of feminist film criticism . The premiere took place on August 5th, 2008 in the Berlin cinema Moviemento .
action
The film asks the moral questions of horror films. Can a catharsis effect be proven in horror films ? Does censorship play a role? How does the horror film relate to pornography? To answer these questions, Klewinghaus brings together greats of the genre such as Wes Craven , John Carpenter and Neil Marshall and questions the make-up artist Tom Savini or the producer Brian Yuzna . In doing so, scientific theses are put forward that well-known critics and film scholars such as Linda Williams , Carol Clover and Barbara Creed question. To reinforce the theses, numerous excerpts from films such as Psycho , Blood Court in Texas , The Silence of the Lambs or The Descent - Abyss of Horror are shown.
reception
In the review, Science of Horror was compared to The American Nightmare by Adam Simon, but Science of Horror was "more demanding" and showed "no fear of scientific theses". However, these had already been designed in the 1990s, which seems questionable in view of the ironically popularizing adaptability of horror films. Furthermore, the film tells "with a refined dramaturgy about the constraints of censorship to the subtle play with sexuality, the distribution of the roles of the sexes in the horror film itself - and in its perception by the audience".
