Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. havasupaiensis is an extremely endangered subspecies of the Sclerocactus parviflorus plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The name refers to the occurrence in Havasupai Canyon. An English common name is "Inner Grand Canyon Cactus".
description
Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. havsupaiensis grows individually spherical to elongated. It becomes 5 to 30 cm long and 3 to 11 cm in diameter. The purple, white bell-shaped flowers are 3 to 5.5 cm long and 3 cm wide.
The flowers appear in a wreath around the apex. The subspecies shows similarities with Sclerocactus polyancistrus which occurs in close proximity in Death Valley in California . The flowering period is from April to May.
distribution
Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. havasupaiensis grows endemically in the interior of the Grand Canyon in Arizona in a limited area on stony hills, widely scattered in knee-high sagebrush bushes at an altitude of 1000 to 1600 m and is associated with Mammillaria tetrancistra , various cactus species , Yucca baccata subsp. vespertina and Agave utahensis var. kaibabensis .
Systematics
The description as Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. havasupaiensis was born in 1995 by Fritz Hochstätter.
Synonyms are Sclerocactus havasupaiensis Clover (1942), Sclerocactus parviflorus var. Roseus Clover (1942), Echinocactus parviflorus var. Havasupaiensis L.D.Benson. (1950) and Sclerocactus whipplei var. Roseus L.D.Benson (1966).
