Fritz Bettelhäuser (born October 2, 1942 in Braunschweig ) is a German trade unionist, artist and metal worker.

Life

Bettelhäuser completed an apprenticeship as a vehicle fitter from 1959 to 1961 and then worked in this profession and as a body fitter at branches of VW, Opel and Daimler-Benz. From 1967 he worked as a ship and steel fitter at the shipyard and machine factory Bremer Vulkan in Vegesack . In 1969, he was elected IG Metall shop steward and works council in this company . In June 1973 he became the spokesman for the Vulkan workforce during the “spontaneous” strikes of the shipyard workers to compensate for inflation. In the subsequent works council elections, he was elected with 2000 of the 3500 votes cast. Bettelhäuser was then chairman of the works council until 1977. Because he was unable to assert himself as a single person against the block of social democratic works councils, he organized the Echolot group from then on, with the result that from 1981 to 1985 he was again chairman of the works council.

From the mid-1970s onwards, Bettelhäuser and representatives of the Bremen Chamber of Labor were among the initiators of the campaign to ban asbestos as work and building material.

Since 1982 he has been working in the “Conversion / Other Useful Products” and “Alternative Production” working groups in the “Maritime Studies” project, and has published several fundamental publications and given a large number of lectures.

In the state elections in Bremen in 1983 , Bettelhäuser stood as one of the candidates for the Bremen Green List (BGL) in order to develop a political alternative to the Federal Greens and to bring positions beyond the social-democratic network of relationships into the Bremen citizenship . He received criticism in particular because the BGL emerged in competition with the company alternative alliance (BAB), which is supported by many “left” union and company officials, the DKP and the workers' policy group .

Since 1989 Bettelhäuser has been a freelance "material designer" with a focus on metal sculptures, collages and construction images. His artistic products are often exhibited at trade union institutions such as the DGB-Bildungszentrum Sasel near Hamburg, where he has had a sculpture exhibition since mid-February 2009.

In terms of trade unions, he continues to be active in various electoral functions at IG Metall and the German Federation of Trade Unions , meanwhile mainly as a representative and delegate of senior citizens' groups.

In November 2018 he was elected one of three deputy state chairmen of the Free Voters Bremen . Bettelhäuser is running on their list for the election of Bremen's citizenship in 2019.
