Scolymus maculatus is an annual plant . It becomes 20-90 centimeters high. In this species the stems are winged throughout . The edge of the leaves and wings is white and heavily thickened. The uppermost leaves are very regularly comb-shaped and thorny. The corollas are hairy black on the outside and are 15 to 17 millimeters long. The bracts are pointed. The achenes do not have a pappus .

The flowering period is April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

The spotted golden thistle occurs in the Mediterranean area. The occurrences in the Canary Islands , Madeira and Porto Santo may not be original.
