Scopaeus is a genus of beetles from the family of the ruffflies (Staphylinidae) within the subfamily Paederinae . It occurs in Europe with 51 species, 14 are also native to Central Europe.

features

The beetles have a small body with a dense, point-like structure on the top and are usually matt or only slightly shiny. They differ from those of the genus Stilicus in their smaller body, the rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs which are beveled at the tip, the noticeably thickened thighs ( femora ) of the forelegs and their large, parallel-edged, almost rectangular head. The mouthparts , antennae and legs are predominantly or completely red-yellow in color.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals live on the edge of water under stones and in alluvial plant material.
