The earth crust wax ( Sebacina incrustans ) is a fungal art from the family of the wax crust relatives (Sebacinaceae) and belongs to the class of Agaricomycetes.
features
Macroscopic features
The earth-wax crust forms resupinate , waxy, white to pale yellow fruiting bodies , which can be shaped very differently. Its edge is often lashed. It often grows around parts of plants such as mosses and blades of grass, which is why it can sometimes be mistaken for corals .
Microscopic features
The egg-shaped spores are 10-12.5 × 6-7 micrometers in size. They are smooth, hyaline and inamyloid , which means they cannot be stained with iodine . The hyphae do not have a buckle .
distribution
The species is widespread. It is found across Europe and North America, but it is also known from Asia (China, Japan) and Australia.
ecology
The earth-wax crust lives on the ground or rotten wood. They often cover plants such as mosses or blades of grass (incrusting), which explains the Latin species name. Soils rich in nutrients are preferred in moist deciduous forests. The species seems to form ectomycorrhiza obligatorily , since it cannot grow in culture.
Systematics
The earth-wax crust was first described by Persoon in 1796 as Corticium incrustans . The brothers Edmond & Charles Tulasne put the type in 1871 on the current name. In 2013 it was shown that the species Sebacina epigaea and Sebacina incrustans are not monophyletic and represent cryptic species .
