Sebastián de Vivanco (* around 1550 in Ávila ; † October 26, 1622 in Salamanca ) was a Spanish composer of the Renaissance .

Life

It is believed that Sebastián de Vivanco received his musical training as well as his somewhat older contemporary Tomás Luis de Victoria at the Cathedral of Avila. His first known position was that of the music director of Lérida Cathedral . He gave up this post in 1576 to go to the Cathedral of Segovia as Kapellmeister . In 1588 he returned to the Cathedral of Avila as Kapellmeister. In 1602 he finally went to Salamanca , where he became Kapellmeister of the local cathedral and from 1603 also professor of music at the university .

Vivanco is considered to be one of the most capable Spanish composers of his generation and, in particular, an excellent counterpoint artist , while as a harmonist he remained largely stuck to the vocabulary of his time.
