Hertrich's works are characterized by a strong handicraft character. Instead of original sculptural materials such as wood and stone, he uses contemporary materials such as acrylic glass and computer circuit boards .

“In the age of digital penetration of all areas of life, the question of the position of people appears to be of increasing relevance. It is this question that is at the center of Sebastian Hertrich's artistic work and that unfolds above all in the materiality of his work and in the work process. In addition to circuit boards, which are used today as a carrier for electronic components in all kinds of devices, acrylic glass is the second distinctive material that the artist uses as a working material. As contemporary products, they embody the character of an artificial and digitized world, which Hertrich expresses in a wide variety of images and subject areas. The aspect of work becomes twofold. On the one hand, it shows itself in terms of motifs, as an homage to the insignia of the active person, such as hand axes and hammers. On the other hand, through the intensive production process, which as a grueling dialogue leaves formative traces in the work and on the artist himself. "
