Sebastian Laverny (* 1969 in Lübeck , real name Sebastian Hernández Tolon) is a Spanish conductor , composer and jazz pianist .

Live and act

As the son of the Spanish violin virtuoso Gustavo Hernández Laverny , Sebastian Laverny received classical music training at an early age (including Lübeck Knabenkantorei) and learned violin, viola (Gustavo Hernández Laverny), piano (Gotlinde Sudau) and conducting (Georg Kardos). Asmus Hess and Heinrich Poos gave him composition lessons . At the same time he discovered his interest in jazz and, inspired by Manhattan Transfer, founded the Vocal Jazz Ensemble . With Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue he made guest appearances as a young pianist in Copenhagen, Kiel and Flensburg in 1987. Further concert tours followed, including to Moscow, Montreal, Gothenburg and Madrid. In 1988 he began studying music at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin with Ingeborg Peukert (piano) and Carl August Bünte (conducting) and directed the symphony orchestra "Junge Ensemble Berlin". At the same time he made a name for himself in the Berlin jazz scene, receiving important impulses from his teacher Walter Norris .

After completing his diploma, Laverny decided to pursue a classical career and initially took up engagements in Linz and Bremen (solo repetitor at Theater Linz , deputy conductor of the Linz Singakademie ), (solo repetitor and Kapellmeister at Theater Bremen ). He also taught jazz piano at the Bremen University of the Arts .

In 1995 he came to the Trier Theater as choir director and Kapellmeister . Since 2001 he has been engaged as choir director and Kapellmeister at the State Theater Mainz . There he established the nationwide unique concert series "A winged opera choir" and was particularly active in the area of ​​cross-over with jazz symphonic projects. Since 2009 he has been touring Germany as a jazz pianist in the Sebastian Laverny Quartet, which also strives to reconcile classical and jazz. Laverny worked with Montserrat Caballé , Coco Schumann , Rick Abao , Oleg Berlin, Charly Antolini , Gerald Stütz, Götz Ommert , Mark Eitzel, Malte Schaefer and Hendrik Meurkens , among others . He also works as an arranger (Werder Bremen Big Band, State Orchestra Rheinische Philharmonie , Staatstheater Mainz, Bundesgartenschau Koblenz ), music lecturer and composer ( Schott Music ). CD recordings, television appearances ( NDR , SWR ) and radio recordings ( RBB , Deutschlandfunk , SWR4) document his work.
