Malte Schaefer

Malte Schaefer (* 1970 in Bochum ) is a German solo violist and singer.

Live and act

After graduating from high school at the Ostring in Bochum, he first studied violin, viola and guitar at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf , before receiving a scholarship at the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1995 . There he played for two years under conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Sir Simon Rattle , Mariss Jansons , Günther Wand , Sir Georg Solti and Seiji Ozawa . In 1997 he became deputy solo violist in the Braunschweig State Orchestra and in 2000 he joined the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra . Malte Schaefer has been 1st principal violist in the Philharmonic State Orchestra Mainz since 2001 . He is also a member of the Mainz String Quartet and the Gutenberg Trio. Since 2003 he has been a regular guest soloist with the Orquesta filarmonica de Gran Canaria .

In the popular music field he played with singer and guitarist David Byrne from Talking heads and with saxophonist Klaus Doldinger .

Malte Schaefer has worked on around 100 CD productions, including two solo CDs together with Catherine Rückwardt under the title Kreislerianer . With these programs he also appeared as a singer and presented chansons by the Viennese chansonnier Georg Kreisler as well as compositions by the Viennese violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler .

In 2004 he founded the “Malte Schaefer Band” with the pianist and composer Sebastian Hernandez-Laverny .

As a soloist he performed the viola concerto by Alfred Schnittke 25 times, which he played to a choreography by Martin Schläpfer as part of Ballet Mainz. He has appeared several times as a soloist with Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante , including with the violinist Natasha Korsakova in Wiesbaden's Friedrich-von-Thiersch-Saal . He also led workshops at international festivals. Concert tours have taken him across Europe, to North and South America, Canada, Japan, Singapore, the Canary Islands and the Antilles. In March 2014, for example, he performed in Santo Domingo both as a soloist with a chamber music ensemble and with a jazz combo.

Malte Schaefer has been married since 1996 and has four children. He is the brother of the conductor Henrik Schaefer .
