Sebastian Anton (Antonius) Scherer (born October 3, 1631 in Ulm ; † August 26, 1712 in Ulm) was an organist at Ulm Minster and a German composer in the southern German musical tradition of the early Baroque.

Life

Scherer was baptized on October 4, 1631 in Ulm. His father was the baker Peter Scherer from Strasbourg in Alsace. Sebastian Scherer first attended the Latin school in Ulm and was accepted into the local grammar school in 1649. Nothing is known about his musical training. However, it is obvious that, given the usual scope of music lessons at Latin schools and grammar schools at the time, which included daily choir singing, instrumental lessons for gifted students and several hours of music theory per week, he had extensive basic training.

On June 17, 1653, he was employed by the Ulm City Council as city musician and vice organist. The previous Sunday he had put his skills to the test by playing stuck on the violas before and after the sermon as much as on the organ of his own compositions . In 1668 he became director musices and took over the management of the Collegium Musicum. After the death of his father-in-law Tobias Eberlin , he took over his office as organist at the Ulm Minster on December 22nd, 1671 . He held this office until the end of his life. In 1684/85 he is said to have worked as an organist at St. Thomas in Strasbourg.

Scherer ensemble

The Scherer Ensemble was founded in 2001 by Thomas Müller in Ulm . It is primarily dedicated to the compositions of Sebastian Anton Scherer, but also to the music of other composers from the 16th to 19th centuries from Ulm and Upper Swabia . The line-up varies from a soloist quartet to a 12-piece vocal ensemble with instrumental accompaniment. Performances and concert programs are carried out in close cooperation with the House of City History Ulm , the Ulmer Museum and the Association for Art and Antiquity in Ulm and Upper Swabia. The musical partner of the ensemble is the Ulm Dean's Cantor Andreas Weil, a proven specialist in Scherer's organ and harpsichord music.

Works

While Scherer's vocal compositions were modeled on works by Heinrich Schütz and Andreas Hammerschmidt , the instrumental works are set to music in the style of Girolamo Frescobaldi .
