Sebastian Steudtner (born May 4, 1985 in Esslingen am Neckar ) is a big wave surfer with German and Austrian citizenship. He is one of the best and most versatile "Aquarians" in the world.

biography

Sebastian Steudtner, the son of a German and an Austrian, grew up in Nuremberg. He discovered his passion for water early on. He had his first contact with surfing in France at the age of 9 on a boogie board. In 2001, the then 16-year-old went to the Hawaiian island of Maui . There he began his career as a windsurfer .

In order to finance surfing, Steudtner worked as a construction worker in the following years. During this time he met the Hawaiian family of Nelson Armitage sr through a friend. who took him in as a family member. Through contact with the Armitage family, Steudtner learned big-wave surfing. On December 15, 2004, Sebastian surfed the world's biggest wave known as Peahi / Jaws on the north coast of Maui. That day the waves were 20 meters high. In 2005, Teahupoo followed , the world's most dangerous wave in Tahiti . Since then, Steudtner has been pursuing his passion for big waves and water on a professional level. These include SUP surfing (stand-up paddle), windsurfing and hydrofoil surfing.

In addition to his sporting achievements, Steudtner is also socially committed. He is a Laureus Sport for Good ambassador and founded the non-profit association wirmachenwelle eV in June 2017. This implements surf therapy for young people from difficult backgrounds in Germany.

In December 2018, Steudtner rescued a Brazilian surfer from drowning after a wipeout at the big wave surf spot Nazaré .

Awards

January 2010 Sebastian Steudtner won the Pichilemu Big Wave 2009 Award in the “Biggest Wave” category and came second in the “Performance of the Year” category.

In April 2010, Sebastian Steudtner was the first German to be nominated for the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards and was the first European to win the “Biggest Wave” category endowed with 15,000 US dollars .

In December 2010 and 2011, Sebastian Steudtner was nominated for the Action Sport Award and voted Surfer of the Year 2010 by the audience and then 2011.

In May 2011, Steudtner handed over two of his surfboards to the Cologne Sport & Olympia Museum , which are to be seen there in the future in the permanent exhibition.

On May 1, 2015, Steudtner won the XXL Big Wave Awards for the second time, again in the “Biggest Wave” category.

Steudtner is the most frequently represented surfer in the German media. He had TV appearances such as Stefan Raab's show TV total , ZDF sports report and numerous articles in print media such as GQ-Magazin , FAZ , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Amica , Focus , Spiegel online , Terra X, among others .
