The Görlitzer Sechsstädteplatz is a square, park-like place in the southern part of the city . It is divided into two triangles by the tram that crosses it diagonally towards Biesnitz . There is a large playground on the east side.
Surname
The name of the square is reminiscent of the Upper Lusatian Six Cities Association , to which Görlitz merged with Bautzen , Kamenz , Löbau , Lauban (now Lubań) and Zittau from 1346 to 1815 .
history
The square was laid out with the expansion of the city south of the Görlitz train station around 1900 according to plans by the town planners from 1892. Most of the Wilhelminian-style buildings from this time have been preserved and have now been renovated. With the construction of the tram line in the direction of the Landeskrone , the future square was also taken into account, but the tram tracks initially led around the square and were not moved to the center of the square until 1939.
At the end of the 1920s an article appeared in the Görlitzer Anzeiger according to which it was planned to build a town hall on the square. One drawing showed the town hall and two arches spanning Biesnitzer Strasse with a tower between the gates. However, this was not a serious outlook into the future.
In 2007 the square got its present shape. Among other things, a play combination with four climbing towers and a hexagonal swing, new benches in the middle of the square and on the diagonal of the footpath crossing the square, as well as delimitations of the green areas were built. The redevelopment of the square cost a total of 250,000 euros, 75 percent of which came from a European funding offer.
today
Today tram line 2 crosses the square on its journey between Biesnitz and Königshufen on a double-track, separate track. On the north and east side of the square there are some shops, a pharmacy, a savings bank branch and a contact point for the Görlitzer Frauenbund. They hold a large family festival on the square every year.
