It prefers rock and coral reefs at depths of one to 40 meters and hides in caves and crevices during the day. The fish feed mainly on smaller fish. features

The six-striped soap bass becomes 30 centimeters long. The dorsal fin has seven hard and 13 to 14 soft rays, the anal fin has two hard and nine soft rays. Six-lined sea bass are dark brown in color. Young fish are initially black with round light spots. Then initially two white longitudinal stripes form on the body flanks, which split up as the body grows. With a size of five centimeters they have three, from a length of eight centimeters six yellow stripes. In older fish, the longitudinal stripes can dissolve again into a series of elongated lines. The skin of the fish contains the extremely bitter poison Grammistin , and Ciguatera poisoning has also been reported.
