Fifty-six

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

56 is a card game that originally came from southern India around the Kerala region. It is based on the game Twenty-eight , but instead of a talon it is played with two decks of cards (48 cards) and in two teams of three players each.

Cultural background

This card game comes from Kerala , where it is very popular. But also outside of Kerala, many 1st and 2nd generation Indian immigrants in Europe play the game at festivities or tournaments organized by South Indian organizations. It belongs to the group of jass and whist games and is considered to be a game that requires analytical skills, good concentration and memory.

Introduction to the rules of the game from 56

Goal of the game

Before the game, the other players have the opportunity to announce their cards in a certain way. This is necessary in order to win tricks by combining the hands between team members. As a rule, each announcement increases the call value. After a team has made an announcement between 28 and 56, the team with the highest bid must try to win at least that announcement by winning tricks. The opposing team must try to prevent this accordingly.

Game colors and ranking

1. Jack, jack B. 3
2. Nine, nine 9 2
3. As, As A. 1
4th Ten, ten 10 1
5. King, King K 0
6th Lady, lady D. 0

I. Information about the colors:

  • The 48 cards consist of two six playing cards: jack, nine, ace, ten, king, queen in the four card colors of hearts , diamonds , spades and clubs .
  • There is no ranking within the colors.
  • If there are six players, each player receives 8 cards.
  • There are twelve trumps per color.

II. Information on the ranking:

  • Even if some hands have the same value, the ace beats the ten and the king beats the queen.
  • If cards of the same rank are played in a round, the first card placed beats the second card of the same rank.
  • What is striking is the great similarity to the ranking of Skat in a trump game.

Before the game

Announcements

The following calls are always called in connection with a color (exception: Nos, Pass, Plus Pass)

  • " Increase number by one, two or more points ": The announcer has the highest or several of the highest cards and many additional cards.
  • Plus ”: The announcer has the highest card and at least two additional cards.
  • One Plus ”: The announcer has the highest card of the suit and only one additional card.
  • Plus One ”: The announcer only has the highest card of the suit and no additional cards.
  • " Two / three / X -Plus ": The announcer has the two / three or X highest card (s) and only one additional card. The number increases accordingly by two / three or X units
  • Minus ”: The announcer has a minimum of three to four trumps of the announced suit, but he does not have the highest card of the suit.
  • " Minus -one / -two / -X ": The announcer has exactly one / two or X cards of the suit and this is not the highest.
  • " Nos or" No-suit "": The announcer has no card of the suit (refers to the last announcement). If all players pass after "Nos" has been called, "No-Trump" is played!
  • " Plus two / three / X Nos ": No card of the suit (refers to the penultimate, third from last, X-last announcer).
  • " Pass ": the number of points does not increase through this announcement. When everyone has passed up to the last announcer, the game begins with the announcement of the last player.
  • " Plus Pass ": the number of points increases with this announcement, but in contrast to the simple "Pass", each player receives a new chance to announce the "Plus Pass" announcement. If all players match a “Plus Pass”, “No-Trump” is played.
  • " No-Trump ": This is a game without a trump. Only the highest card counts. This announcement increases the number of points by one further unit.

Explanation of the announcement procedure

  • The player to the left of the dealer starts with a call value of 28 to announce his cards.
  • If the first player passes, this is, exceptionally, equivalent to a "plus pass" announcement.
  • With every announcement, the number increases by at least one unit ( exception: pass).
  • No player including the first player is obliged to call.
  • If no announcement is made by a player during the entire call procedure, the team to the left of the dealer will automatically play a "No-Trump game"
  • The calling procedure ends when, following a player's announcement, the remaining players in the round pass.
  • The highest possible reputation is 56, as this is the max. represents achievable score.
  • The team with the highest bid has the option of choosing a game with or without a trump (no-trump) .
  • If the highest bidding team decides on a trump game, it can also determine the trump suit.
  • A "Nos" may only be called if the color has been announced at least once beforehand.
  • All other announcements can be made at any time.
  • Attention: Every player has the opportunity to represent an announcement, even if this player does not have this card (calls of deception)

Example announcements in a game

Note: The first announcement begins with 28. (The players with the even ordinal numbers form a team; the odd numbers form the opposing team.)

  • 1. Player makes the following announcement: 28 hearts (he has the jack and at least 3 additional cards)
  • 2nd player raised: 29 plus clubs (he has the highest card, i.e. the jack and 2 additional cards)
  • 3rd player raised: 30 plus one hearts (he has the second jack and no additional cards; only a "plus one heart" call would have the same meaning as 30 plus one hearts)
  • 4. Player passes (the number remains at 30)
  • 5th player: "31 One Plus Hearts" (He thus has the nine hearts, because this is the next highest card after the 2 announced Jacks of Hearts and an additional card)
  • 6. Player: "Nos" (so he has no heart card; the reputation has increased to 32)
  • 1st player: "Two Plus Diamonds" (He thus has two jacks of diamonds and one extra card. The number of points is now 34.)
  • 2. Player passes (even if he has another jack, he does not announce it for tactical reasons.)
  • 3. Player passes (the called number of 34 does not increase with this call.)
  • 4. Player makes the following announcement: "Minus Kreuz" (He has at least three to four clubs cards, but without the highest card. The announced points are now 35.)
  • 5. Player passes. (If player 6,1,2,3 would also pass, then player 4 would have determined the trump with the called cross. The game would then also begin.
  • 6. The player makes the following announcement: "Minus one club" (He only has one club card and not the highest one. The announced points have now risen to 36.)
  • 1st player: "38 of spades" (Since player 1 has increased the points by two units, he has the 2 jacks of spades and many additional cards; if he had 2 jacks of spades and few additional cards he would have called 2 plus spades)
  • 2. Player passes.
  • 3. Player calls: "40 No-Trump"
  • all other players pass.

Player 3's announcement is now binding: The first team must now try to reach 40 points.

The game

procedure

The game is played counter-clockwise. The player to the right of the dealer places the first card. The player with the highest card takes the trick and is the next to play a card. At the end of the game, all the tricks are added up and the team must at least have scored the announced points.

Trump

There is compulsory color: If a color is played, all players must use this color as long as they hold cards of this color in their hand. If a teammate cannot serve, he has the option of playing a trump card or any other card (which then becomes the lowest-ranking card). The next players in the round have the opportunity to outdo, provided that they too do not have the required color.

After the game

The announcement team wins

The announcement team receives for the announced points:

  • 28 - 39 = 1 point
  • 40 - 47 = 2 pts.
  • 48 - 55 = 3 pts.
  • 56 = 4 pts.

The opposing team wins

The opposing team receives for the announced points:

  • 28 - 39 = 2 pts.
  • 40 - 47 = 3 pts.
  • 48 - 55 = 4 pts.
  • 56 = 5 pts.
  • In the announcement round, each opposing player has the opportunity to call a double.
  • If a double is called, all players can announce additional cards, provided the round has not yet ended.
  • A double is therefore only effective if, after the double call, all players in the round have passed.
  • The players who have been "doubled" can return this with a redouble.

Double and Redouble double the points scored in both cases. "Double" (like Contra) is pronounced by opponents after the last announcement: doubling of the points . "Re-Double" (such as Re or Recontra) by a member of the announcement team in response to a "Double": Quadrupling the points .
