The sea bats (Ogcocephalidae) are bottom-dwelling fish from the order of the armfin fish (Lophiiformes).
distribution
Sea bats live worldwide, with the exception of the Mediterranean , in subtropical and tropical seas, on the bottom, mostly at greater depths of 100 meters. Only the genus Ogcocephalus , native to the Caribbean , the western Atlantic and around the Galápagos Islands, prefers shallower water.
features
The large-headed, often brightly colored, red and orange colored and 5 to 30 cm long fishes have a strangely flattened (exception is the genus Coelophrys ), triangular or round, partly protected by spiny bone plates. Only the first ray remains of the dorsal fin, which has been transformed into the rod typical of the armfinch (Lophiiformes). In some species it is also located on a horn-like appendage at the front of the head (hence the name Ogcocephalus from (old Greek) ogkos (Latinized oncus , " swell ") and cephale "head").
