The soul chapel is a Catholic chapel in Kempten (Allgäu) . The former cemetery chapel is a listed building and was built in baroque forms under Rupert von Bodman .

history

It was built in 1680 as a cemetery chapel in the cemetery of the collegiate town. This cemetery replaced the cemetery at the old parish church of St. Lorenz "uff'm Berg", which was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and on the site of which the baroque St. Lorenz Church was built from 1651 .

The cemetery by the Seelenkapelle was abandoned in 1804, soon after the secularization of the prince monastery of Kempten . It stretched west and north of the chapel and was surrounded by a wall. Today the northern part of this wall is still preserved in the building at Stiftsgartenweg 6, although it is planned to demolish it. As a replacement, today's Catholic cemetery was laid north of the monastery town at the beginning of the 19th century .

The soul chapel was owned by the parish of St. Lorenz and was used for a long time for the services of Italian Catholics in Kempten. A few years ago it was sold to the Russian Orthodox parish and has only been accessible during church services since then.

description

inner space

The soul chapel is a single-nave building with a polygonal choir . Between 1929 and 1930 the old ceiling was replaced by a barrel vault . On the roof is a roof turret with a bell. This was originally on the west side and was rebuilt after a fire on the east side of the chapel. To the south of the chapel stands a Marienbrunnen by the sculptor Hans Wachter .

Furnishing

The high altar of the chapel dates from 1929/30. The side altars date from 1700 and have altar leaves by Franz Benedikt Hermann that refer to the poor souls. The northern picture shows a view of the soul chapel and the former collegiate church of St. Lorenz. The scene in the southern altar panel shows the supplication of the Holy Family by the poor souls. The altar section of the northern side altar shows St. Lawrence , the southern one shows St. Sebastian .

The paintings are from the 17th or 18th century. The three paintings show the flight into Egypt , the crucifixion and St. Ambrose.

On the west wall there are heraldic gravestones with the following inscriptions:

  • Councilor JA Moser, † 1722
  • Veronika Moser
  • JJ Moser, † 1752
  • Maria A. Th. Vorster, † 1695
