Naval battle on Lake Constance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The naval battle on Lake Constance was a military confrontation between Romans and Celts that took place in 15 BC. On Lake Constance (lat. Lacus Brigantinus ). However, it can hardly be compared in terms of scope and importance with the classic ancient sea battles.

Prehistory and course

The battle was part of the last phase of the Alpine campaigns carried out by Drusus and Tiberius to conquer Raetia . Here Drusus penetrated from northern Italy across the Alps in the direction of today's Augsburg ( Augusta Vindelicorum ) , while Tiberius gathered his army of probably around 10,000 legionnaires and a similar number of auxiliary troops first in southwest Germany ( Roman camp Dangstetten ), and then via the To advance Lake Constance eastwards to Augsburg. Arriving at Lake Constance, Tiberius had a flotilla of transport ships built, using an island (possibly the Mainau ) as a base. According to Strabo , there should then have been a sea battle with the local Celtic tribe of the Vindeliker , which the Romans were able to decide in their favor. Cassius Dio, on the other hand, only reports that Tiberius crossed the lake on ships.
