Sega Rally Championship is an arcade game developed by AM3 based on the Sega Model 2 board. The game was released in the arcade halls in 1995. A year later it was ported for the Sega Saturn and Windows . The great feature of Sega Rally was the ability to ride on different surfaces (including asphalt, gravel and mud). The driving behavior changes accordingly. Because of this, Sega Rally is considered one of the milestones in the development of the racing game genre. Retro Gamer magazine called it the best racing game of all time.

Sega Rally Championship 2 is the successor to Sega Rally Championship . It is also an arcade racing game, which was produced by the development department AM3 of the Sega company . It was released as an arcade machine in 1998 and as a Dreamcast version in 1999. There is also an implementation for Windows PCs.

Graphically, the game was very appealing for the time thanks to the Dreamcast hardware. The fact that the game appeared in both an arcade and a Dreamcast or PC version makes it an example of the fact that at this time the consoles and personal computers were the first to relativize the graphical superiority of the arcade machines.

The following game modes can be selected: Arcade mode, Championship, Training, Time Attack and 2-player battle

The racing game also includes a 10-year championship mode. This is a special career mode in which you have to successfully complete all races in a year in order to advance into the next year. For the duration of a year, you drive under a wide variety of weather conditions and at different times of the day. A new car is activated for each completed racing season.

The Dreamcast version of the racing game can be controlled either with the Dreamcast controller or with a steering wheel peripheral.

Sega Rally 3

Sega Rally 3 is the arcade successor to Sega Rally 2 , developed by SEGA Racing Studio and published by Sega . The game was released on June 30, 2008 in American arcade halls.

Arcade machine configurations

Sega Rally 3 is available in four different arcade machine configurations: a large deluxe motion variant, a deluxe variant, a smaller variant and finally a variant for a single player (only for the US market). The deluxe-motion version contains a 62 "- HDV - DLP monitor and a dual actuator motion simulation system . That moves the player seating up to six arcade machines can be linked for multiplayer racing.

Sega Rally Online Arcade

Sega Rally 3 was released on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network as Sega Rally Online Arcade in 2011 . It is essentially the same game, but with a few changes to the difficulty level as well as an added online multiplayer.

Sega Rally (2007)

Sega Rally (In the USA Sega Rally Revo ) is an off-road racing game and the fourth part of the Sega rally series. The game was released for PC , Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable on September 28, 2007 in Europe. It was developed simultaneously with Sega Rally 3 ( arcade game ) by SEGA Racing Studios and distributed by Sega . The PSP version, unlike the other versions, was developed by Bugbear Entertainment . The main feature of this variant of Sega Rally is the ability to deform the subsurface. Tire tracks and the like thus remain on the track as ruts during the race.

Gameplay

There are a total of 34 vehicles, each of which is divided into three groups: Premier Class ( 4WD cars), Modified Class ( 2WD cars) and Master Class (mostly classic rally cars). There are also some bonus cars that are unlocked as the game progresses. The bonus cars include Dakar types, buggies, etc. Apart from the bonus cars, each car has three different liveries and two setups. The setup is either off road, with better grip on loose surfaces or asphalt, with better top speed and more grip on hard surfaces. The different environments all have three lanes (some of which are also driven in the opposite direction - at a different time of the day) and are unlocked as the game progresses in Championship mode.

development

The game was developed by SEGA Racing Studio in Solihull, England. There are over 30 different rally cars to choose from, in six different environments, with a total of 16 tracks. The game was developed with the GeoDeformation engine, which makes the terrain dynamically deformable. Two players can race against each other at the same time in split-screen mode, while up to six drivers can compete against each other in online multiplayer.

reception

The game was largely positively rated by the trade press. Mainly the direct and easy to learn control, the detailed, sharp textures and the varied backdrops were praised. On the other hand, the rubber band AI, the too high level of difficulty and the small number of routes were criticized. The online magazine 4Players wrote: “The new Sega Rally is pure arcade racing! Successful driving fun is clearly the focus of this mud battle. "

The GamePro said: “The driving physics may not always be realistic, but it remains understandable at all times. And it's a lot of fun to see how the cars gradually pound the track and muck themselves in. Especially since the ruts and puddles not only look great, but also have a playful effect. Therefore: Engineers use Colin, but those who want to slide through the mud without complications can join SEGA Rally. 10/10 "

In contrast, the rather negative criticism from the English side GameTap: “Revo is moderately fun at best. The sense of speed is decent. The sense of control, power, and precision per car is hard to distinguish for the majority of vehicles, and there is nothing wacky, silly, or distinct about the game that provides that creative hook that other racing games such as Daytona USA, Colin McRae Racing, or Gran Turismo provide. In short, Sega Rally Revo is disappointing. "

At Metacritic , the Windows version reaches 74/100, the PS3 version 75/100, the Xbox 360 version 77/100 and the PSP version 74/100. The metascores of the GameRankings website are also in this range.

Differences from Sega Rally Revo, Sega Rally 3 and Sega Rally Online Arcade

The Sega Rally Online Arcade is a port of the Sega Rally 3, which was developed simultaneously with Sega Rally Revo . In terms of content, Online Arcade , apart from the added online mode, is the same as Sega Rally 3 , while Sega Rally Revo offers significantly more content. The control and camera settings of the vehicles are not based on the Sega Rally Revo, but on the Sega Rally 3 arcade model . The biggest change compared to the arcade version, i.e. Sega Rally 3 , is the reduced level of difficulty so that the game is easier to learn.
