Gunhild Sehlin

Gunhild Sehlin (born December 10, 1911 in Eksjö ; † July 13, 1996 in Vittsjö ) was a Swedish educator and children's book author.

life and work

After graduating in 1935, Sehlin taught first as a primary school teacher in Hultatorp , and from 1954 in Vittsjö, a small town in the north-east of the southern Swedish province of Skåne . Later, she worked for the Swedish children's aid organization IM - Individuell Mannniskohjälp with disabled children in Jerusalem, then in the Jordanian capital Amman .

Sehlin became internationally known with her children's book classic Marias lilla åsna ( English: Mary's little donkey ) and the sequel Åsnan och barnet (German: Escape to Egypt ). The story, which is now translated into many European languages, was published in Germany in 1962. The 34th edition of the book is now available in German translation. The ARD and the children's channel showed the story of Maria's little donkey in the Christmas period 2004/2005 as an eight-part animated series in the show with the mouse . The Christmas story is told from the perspective of a supposedly lazy and stubborn little donkey from Nazareth , which the carpenter Joseph gives to his pregnant wife Maria . The two quickly realize that the donkey is a clever animal. When Joseph and Mary had to move to Bethlehem at the behest of the Roman emperor, they only succeeded with the help of the donkey.
