Selahattin Almay (born April 10, 1909 in Istanbul ; † June 1, 1971 ibid) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. Due to his many years of work for İstanbulspor and as its own generation, he is seen as one of the most important personalities of this association. He was an important part of that Istanbulspor team that won the championship in the 1931/32 İstanbul Futbol Ligi season and thus achieved the greatest success in the club's history. He was also one of the most important performers of the Güneş SK club , which surprisingly won all of Turkey's major titles in the 1937/38 season. He later played for Galatasaray Istanbul and later worked for this and the Turkish Football Association as an official.

Player career

society

Almal's career is incompletely documented. He belonged from the second half of the 1920s to the squad of the club İstanbulspor, which was founded in 1926, and played with this in the game İstanbul Ligi (German Istanbul League ). Since there was no national professional league in Turkey at that time, regional leagues existed instead in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which İstanbul Ligi (also called İstanbul Futbol Ligi) was considered the most renowned.

In the 1931/32 season of this league Almay and his team were surprisingly able to win the championship of this league and thereby achieve the greatest success in the club's history. With this title win, Istanbulspor became the fourth club to win this trophy after the clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul , known as the three greats . Almay was one of the main performers of this championship team. In the championship season he was the most successful goalscorer of his team with seven goals in seven games. After this season, which is steeped in history for the club, Almay stayed at Istanbulspor for three more seasons, but his team was no longer able to play for the championship. Almay himself remained the most successful goalscorer of his team and one of the most successful goalscorer in the league in these three seasons.

The activity Almond in the season 1935/36 remained undocumented, but he began to play for the league rivals Güneş SK in the summer of 1936 . Therefore, he had left Istanbulspor either in the summer of 1935 or in the summer of 1936 and instead hired at Güneş SK. This club was founded by members of this club in 1933 due to an internal dispute at Galatasaray Istanbul. Almost half of the Galatasaray team and many club members left this club and founded the new club Güneş SK. In his first active season for Güneş, he and his team finished the league behind Fenerbahçe and before Galatasaray as runner-up. Almay immediately established himself as a performance player within the team and was by far the most successful goalscorer of his team with a total of 21 goals. In the 1937/38 season Almays team managed to win the title of the Istanbul League. As a result, Almay was again part of the next team to win this title after winning the title with Istanbulspor in the 1931/32 season. In addition to the Istanbul championship, the title in the Milli Küme was won this season , a kind of championship tournament in which the teams of the three cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir participated. As a result, Almay's team won all of Turkey's major titles this season. In this championship season they inflicted one of the bitterest defeats in the club's history away from Galatasaray. So the club from which Güneş was founded and some founding members were expelled in the league game of Milli Küme on March 20, 1938 with 0: 7 defeated. Almay scored two goals in that game.

Güneş took on the Istanbul League again after this championship season, but surprisingly broke up after the 4th matchday. This dissolution of the association was accompanied by a dispute settlement with Galatasaray. After this club dissolution, most of the squad rejoined Galatasaray, including Almay. He played for Galatasaray for four seasons and was one of the club's most important players except last season. In terms of titles, Almay and Galatasaray only won the Milli Küme championship in the 1938/39 season. In the 1941/42 season Almays team delivered a head-to-head race for the Istanbul team with their arch rivals Beşiktaş, but awarded them on the last day of the game with a point difference to the arch rivals.

For the 1943/44 season Almay left Galatasaray and returned to Istanbulspor for his first season. For this club he played until the summer of 1946 and then ended his career.

National team

Almay began his national team career in 1932 with a commitment for the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Yugoslav national team . By October 1931 he completed three more international matches, scoring three goals.

With the Turkish selection Almay took part in the Balkan Cup in 1931 and was with this silver medalist.

Trainer and functionary career

Almay looked after his club İstanbulspor as head coach after the end of his playing career . He later moved his residence to the southern Turkish port city of Mersin and worked for the sports club Mersin İdman Yurdu for a long time . In addition to his efforts to establish Mersin İY as a club in Turkish football, he also looked after it as a coach. For a while he was a partner in Çukurova Holding , the longstanding main sponsor of Mersin İdman Yurdu.

From 1965 to 1968 he worked as a functionary for the Turkish Football Association during the presidency of Orhan Şeref Apak . For the last few years he has worked for the state sports betting provider Spor Toto .
