Selenicereus chrysocardium is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Selenicereus chrysocardium grows epiphytically with strong, ascending shoots . The flattened, leaf-like shoots are up to 30 centimeters wide, curved upwards and narrower towards the tip. The edges are deeply lobed. The lobes are 13 to 15 inches long and 4 inches wide. The areoles sit in a notched depression on the top of the lobes and sometimes have 2 to 3 short bristles.

The long funnel-shaped, white, sour cream scented flowers are up to 32 centimeters long and have a diameter of 20 centimeters. Your pericarpel is strongly humped and covered with scales and bristles. The strong green, spherical fruits have a diameter of 7 centimeters. They are densely covered with gray-felted areoles, from which numerous spines up to 2 centimeters long arise, which fall off when fully ripe. The whitish pulp smells fruity.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Selenicereus chrysocardium is widespread in the Mexican states of Chiapas (in the north) and Tabasco in moist forests at low altitudes. The first description as Epiphyllum chrysocardium was published in 1956 by Edward Johnston Alexander . Myron William Kimnach (* 1922) placed it in 1991 in the genus Selenicereus .

The systematic position of the species is unclear. David Richard Hunt and Ralf Bauer suggested leaving them in the genus Epiphyllum .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
