The semi-container liner 17/18 ships were developed by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft .

history

The Flensburger Schiffsbau-Gesellschaft has been responsible for the design of type ships in the cooperating shipyard group FSG / Bremer Vulkan since the 1960s and developed the 17/18 series in 1969/70. The basic designation 17/18 was based on the two parameters 17,000 tonnes load capacity and 18 knots speed. A total of four variants were developed and offered. However, only four units in two variants were built between 1970 and 1972. The basic type 17 / 18A Semi-Liner was a slightly larger version of the successful German multi-purpose freighter , but was not built. The variant 17 / 18B Container Liner I had another hatch layout with two rear double hatches and more sophisticated cargo gear with two Stülckenbäumen . A copy of this type was ordered from the Leonhardt & Blumberg shipping company in Hamburg. The version 17 / 18C Containerliner II again had differently cut hatches with two medium-long double hatches and even more versatile loading gear. The shipping company Ernst Jacob from Flensburg received three ships of the type. The last variant, the 17 / 18D full container, was designed as a pure container ship with container cells and without its own loading gear. This type was not built either.

The ships were used worldwide. While Leonhardt & Blumberg continued to operate their ship for over two decades and only sold them in 1995, the Jacob shipping company sold its three ships in the early 1970s. One of the Jacob ships went to the Chinese shipping company COSCO in 1973 and later remained in service for a long time under various Chinese owners. The other two Jacob ships were acquired by a Cuban shipping company in 1974 and demolished in 1987 and 1996 after further changes of ownership. The type ship Luise Leonhardt served a further owner from 1996 until 2003 before it was scrapped.

technology

The ship type was designed as a versatile semi-container ship for regular and tramp travel. The deckhouse was arranged aft above the engine plant. The ships were initially measured as swap-decks. They had a continuous main deck with a back and poop . All five holds , each with an intermediate deck, were in front of the deckhouse. With a view to the use in the line journey, versatile loading devices were installed. The Luise Leonhardt was equipped with ten conventional 5/10 tonne loading booms, two 20/40 tonne loading booms and two 80 tonne cambered heavy cargo booms to take over heavy cargo . Instead of the conventional front mast, the three Jacob ships also had a 35-tonne telescopic heavy lift boom that could be pivoted through. Further cargo equipment was the cargo tank for sweet oil cargo located in the bow area under the dry cargo holds .

The ships of the series were initially propelled by twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines from MAN, which operated on a fixed propeller. However, all four ships later received new propulsion systems with two-stroke engines.
