The Fleckendorf transmitter in the municipality of Ansfelden in Austria was an institution of the Austrian Post and Telegraph Administration . It consisted of two shortwave transmitters for the overseas radio telephony service with North and South America and a VHF directional radio antenna .
The first shortwave transmitter was put into operation in October 1954, the second shortwave transmitter and the directional radio tower followed at the end of 1955. The Fleckendorf transmitter included the receiving station in Kalling near Schärding , which recorded incoming overseas calls and forwarded them to the central post office in Linz, from where the switching to the participants took place. From 1956 to 1968 international broadcasts of the ORF were also broadcast on one of the shortwave stations.
In 1978, with the construction of the Ansfelden directional radio station, the Fleckendorf radio station became superfluous. The shortwave transmitters were also no longer needed, and the entire transmission system was handed over to the Austrian Armed Forces , which operated a training transmitter there. The plant was closed in 1996 and sold in 1997. The shortwave transmitters were dismantled and the area recultivated. Since then, the 110-meter-high, former radio relay tower and the transmission tower used by mobile phone operators and the transmission building, in which various companies have rented, testify to the former system.
